The season at River Karup has already started. It is summer, and the bright summer nights are back.It is the time that anglers gather at the banks of River Karup. All in the hope of catching a fresh sea trout.Reports in different medias of daily catching draws anglers from far and near and a friend of mine from Zealand contacted me in June:
”Bønnelykke, I’m coming over to fish in the river, are you up for it?”.
He didn’t have to ask twice, off course I was ready :-)
Dinner was consumed when I one Tuesday evening at the end of June drove to Trandum Camping to meet up with Christian. When we met, we were cheerful, and so were the expectations for the evening trip since the creek quite recently had been full of big sea trout. Christian’s eagerness to arrive at the river was big and after a short chat, we drove down to lower area of the river.
When we arrived at the parking spot early in the evening, the sun was still up. We are both into fly-fishing and Christian wanted to know why we were going to this area of the river.
This area is not like other parts of the creek, it is more straight and have some very fine spots where different fish can be caught. There are many rushes which supplies very suitable rest areas for the sea trout since they like to have “a roof over their heads” and therefore it was an obvious choice. I showed him a couple of good spots along the way and it was time to go fishing.
Later in the evening, we met further down the stretch:
” Have you seen anything, Christian”, I asked?
” Nothing at all, but it is great to be back by the river”, he answered.
At the same moment, a sea trout jumped free of the water right in front of us. While talking we saw another 2 fish making a mark.
A single sea trout seemed to be impressed and looked closely at the fly but without being hooked.
Since the next day was a working day for both of us, the fishing stopped when the sun disappeared in the horizon.
The next day Christian returned to the same area at a spot where it was common for a trout to be seen. When he reached the spot, one of the giants of the river took his fly and it was caught by Christian.
After a short period, Christian phoned me and his voice indicated that something had happened.

“I have caught a big sea trout; do you want to come and take some pictures”?
Shortly after, with my camera, I was on my way to the river. Naturally, I wanted to share the experience, it was his biggest sea trout up to now. My joy of seeing Christian was huge, and we both performed a victory dance in a frenzy of joy. The fish and the fisherman looked amazing before the camera and the event of the evening was rounded off with a “River Karup Whisky”.
A very happy man, Christian, had a new personal record on 82 centimeters and 8.5 kilos.
