River Skjern zone 2
River Skjern grows bigger after the junction with River Karstoft. It is from 6 up to 12 meters wide. The landscape is still hilly and the small forests are replaced by open fields. The river wriggle like an eel, and the flow is quick. Short fly rods, 11-13 feet, fit well here.
River Skjern zone 1
This is the upper part of River Skjern. The stretch begins at Arnborg at a place called “The Confusion”. It ends where River Karstoft joins the River Skjern – between Skarrild and Sdr. Felding. The river meanders through a landscape alternating between moorland and forest. The river is quite narrow, no more than 4-8 meters wide. The current is fast and solid soil structures (hardpan) on the bottom create varied currents. Short fly rods and short shooting heads fit perfectly here. The fishing pressure is moderate leaving plenty of room for exploring large areas. Even with stormy weather from the west, it is possible to find places with shelter up here thanks to the hilly landscape and the winding path of the river.
River Skjern zone 3
Just before the town of Borris, River Vorgod, a major tributary, meets River Skjern. Downstream of the junction, the river grows to a width of 10-20 meters. The stretch upstream from the road bridge at Borriskrog contains some of the deepest parts of the entire river. Here heavy sink fly lines are required during the spring fishing. Downstream the bridge, the landscape changes character. The hilly landscape is replaced by a more flat and open one. Here there is little shelter when the west wind blows. The windy conditions and the size of the river call for fly rods from 12 to 14 feet in length.
River Skjern zone 4
Three kilometers downstream of Albæk Bridge, River Omme meets River Skjern. The additional water from this major tributary makes River Skjern grow to a width of 20-30 meters. Here, even a 14-foot long fly rod suddenly looks small. Many salmon are caught in this lower part of the river, and the stretch attracts many anglers. THE WILD RIVER SKJERN SALMON
The salmon in River Skjern is the original strain of wild salmon
The salmon moved in as the ice recedeed and formed the River Skjern valley. In other words, the salmon’s history goes more than 10,000 years back in time.
Genetically the River Skjern salmon is unique and distinguishable from other salmon stocks. Generation after generation, the wild salmonid stocks has adapted to their native stream. The river’s salmon express traits in behavior, morphology and physiology reflecting ambient environmental conditions within their home river system.
In the 1970s and early 1980s, environmental degradation caused the salmon populations in Danish rivers to decline. The number of rod caught salmon dwindled, and at a point, biologist almost considered the species extinct.
Fortunately, the salmon was saved for the future, not least thanks to many volunteers dedicated to restoring the river’s wild salmon runs. In collaboration with biologists they worked hard to conserve, restore and enhance salmon and their habitat in the River Skjern system.
Instrumental in this was a “salmon action plan” decided by the Danish government in 1993 aiming at securing the country’s remaining wild salmon stocks.
The biologists used an electric current to stun some of the few remaining wild salmon in the river in autumn when they were near to spawning. Those wild salmon were used as the hatchery brood-stock where eggs and milt were carefully stripped from the hen and cock fish respectively. The eggs were incubated in running water and the salmon fry that developed were later released into the river.
The salmon action plan and all the effort were a success as more and more salmon returned to the River Skjern. In the meantime, new spawning beds had been created and many of the former obstacles at fish farms were removed as the majority of the fish farms were closed.

Recommended fishing tackle for River Skjern
The salmon in Skjern may weigh 5, 10, 15, 20 ... kilos. Such big and strong fish will be the ultimate test for your tackle. Rods, reels, lines, and hooks must be fit for fight with big salmon. If your tackle is to light, you will be punished mercilessly!

Keeping fish - or releasing it
Prior to each new fishing season, a total allowable catch, or quota, is fixed for the River Skjern.
This quota is divided into two: One for large salmon (longer than 75 centimeters) and one for small salmon (salmon below 75 centimeters).
For the 2019 season the quota for large salmon will be divided in two:
1) One half of the quota is open from the season starts 16th April.
2) The other half will be open from 16th June.
The quota of salmon smaller than 75 centimeters is open from the day the season starts. It is legal to take (kill) one salmon per person per year as long as the fish is caught before the quota is exhausted. When the quota of the two size groups have been exhausted, only catch & release fishing is allowed. Salmon must be released as gently as possible.
Sea trout
For sea trout it is legal to keep one fish per season. Most anglers, however, release all sea trout as they need this helping hand for the stock to build up. The River Skjern anglers support the efforts to restore the river’s fish stocks and take responsibility to help conserve stocks by following the regulations on maximum catch sizes and rules for the use of barbless hooks

My Belgium fishing friend had only made two half-hearted casts before he was into a fish. Everybody reeled in and ran to see what was going on. The guide nearly had to dive in to bring the salmon securely to the bank. And what a fish! A 90 centimeters long perfect bar of silver. The lucky angler had the fish smoked and took it back home to Belgium to sa-vour it with his fishing friends and their wives. Good manners on the riverbank
These unwritten do’s and don’ts are as important as the more recent regulations as they ensure the best fishing conditions for all anglers on the river. Talking to local anglers and observing their behavior on the riverbank will assist in determining local angling etiquette. When in doubt, let courtesy be your guide.
Below are a number of generally accepted principles of common courtesy and respect:
- No stress: Part of the joy of fishing is to get away from everyday routines and the hustle and bustle of daily life. Accept that others arrived before you on your chosen stretch of river, and, as a general rule, always start behind those who are already fishing the pool.
- Keep your distance: In case you have no other option than to start your fishing in front of a fellow angler, make sure to do so with a minimum of 100 meters between the two of you.
- Ask: It is good manners to ask permission before you start fishing downstream of a fellow angler.
- Keep on the move: Do not ‘freeze’ when fishing one of the recognized taking spots in the river. Take 3-5 steps between each cast in order to constantly move along the river.
- Celebrate: If you are lucky and catch a fish, remember to enjoy the moment. In this situation, be courteous and stop your own fishing, giving other anglers a chance to fish.
- Reel in when an angler is playing a fish: When an angler is playing a fish, as a matter of courtesy, quickly reel in so that lines don’t get tangled. You may offer assistance to the angler in landing the fish if you feel confident to do so. Otherwise, it is always appreciated if you take a series of photos during the fight and a quick photo of the fish as it is landed or released.
- Do not prolong the ‘photo session’: If the fish is to be released, give it the best chances to survive after having been caught by releasing it quickly. Don’t lift the fish clear of the water.
- Positive thinking: Contribute to the positive and respectful atmosphere at the river.
Respect the river and the land: Do not leave rubbish or start fires.

The River Skjern is varied and so are the challenges facing the visiting salmon angler.
The upper stretches are very different compared to the lower section of the river and tackle and tactics must be adapted accordingly. If you are visiting this area for the first time, hiring a guide can be extremely worthwhile. Our experienced and skilled guides offer their expertise to individuals as well as to groups. These excellent guides work hard to ensure that you receive the best advice enabling you to have the best possible chance of landing a fish. They share skills and knowledge and provide step-by-step onsite instruction.
When you hire a guide through the House of the Salmon you are assured that the guide:
• Has great local knowledge.
• Knows the different beats very well and can point out the hot spots where salmon rest.
• Has expertise in fishing with fly or spinner.
